Hypnotic RegressionWe spend much of our time as human beings in a state of regression. Even though the battle cry for living in the present “Be Here Now, Be Now Here!” still rings in our ears, we move into trance states and experience regressions often. Some ExamplesImagine you are talking to someone about a comic movie you saw last week. As those funny scenes pass into your conscious recollection, you are back in that theatre and laughing as the comic moment is relived. Imagine looking through a pile of family photos. You come across that picture of yourself at your 10th birthday party. If the picture reminded you of an embarrassing moment you might find yourself blushing. If you see a photo of when you got that special bike that you always wanted, you might relive a moment of zooming around the block before returning to the present. Conversely, have you ever had your spouse or boss ask you to do something and you experienced a feeling of anger quite unrelated or out of proportion to the words spoken? Upon later reflection you realize that the question made you feel like you did when your parents told you to clean your room when you were 5 years old. These are all examples of regression. Some are enjoyable and some can produce negative interactions with people in the present. I’m sure your spouse would rather that you were in the present and responding than regressing and reacting to the parental voice as a tired and rebellious 5 year old. Regressive therapy techniques are a sound tool for healing pain from the past ranging from childhood traumas to adult post-traumatic stress disorders. Most phobic responses, as well, can be treated with variations on regression techniques. Past Life RegressionNow we come to the million-dollar question. What about past life regression? Without getting into the question of whether there truly are linearly progressing past lives, let us “act as if”. If you have a symptom, a malady, a behavior that has brought you to a therapeutic intervention, can regression therapy help? Often, in the field of hypnotherapy, a patient is set on the road to recovery by contact with archetypal symbols and role-playing with metaphoric imagery. If the interpretation of a dream can bring insight into the root causes of a problem, why is there a need to acknowledge anything but the therapeutic hypnotic reality? Often, a past life session has stopped in the early childhood of this life where the roots of the presenting problem is found, confronted and resolved. On occasion a client with no intention of considering past life regression, will find them self confronting imagery of other times and places. Either way, the treatment is the same, discovery, understanding and resolution. Reality is subjective in the world of transpersonal hypnotherapy.
